VCM: What sparked the idea of creating a podcast?

Simon: I think I have science in my blood. My dad is a professor of physiology. As you can imagine, dinner table talks were somewhat complex. Through that upbringing, I learned the importance of curiosity, scientific principles, and, perhaps most importantly, how to translate fancy science talk into words everyone can grab ahold of. The podcast is an extension of that same dinner table conversation, a space where I can continue these exchanges about science with people from whom we can learn a great deal.

VCM: Who are the listeners of The Proof?

Simon: Listeners of The Proof are people who appreciate science but don't have the time or the training to make sense of it. They want to be less confused and feel more confident and empowered. They're not interested in agendas, quick fixes, fads, etc. They are highly intelligent adults who want an objective overview of the evidence on a particular topic so they can feel confident that their lifestyle choices will pay off or improve their health.

VCM: What are the recurring themes or topics that you cover on the show?

Simon: Some of the biggest themes or topics we keep revisiting, as unsexy as they may be, are the importance of prioritizing and optimizing sleep, doing resistance training and cardio, and eating a plant-rich diet based on whole foods. These are the big ticket items, and if you get those right most of the time over decades, that is what matters.

VCM: How do you keep the conversation going with your listeners?

Simon: To keep the conversation going with our listeners, we have an online community people can join by going to Community.TheProof.Com. There, I answer questions, and community members will engage with one another. I also have a “your questions answered” segment in my weekly Proof email newsletter, where I provide answers to questions that I receive on social media. There's also a Dad Joke of the week in that newsletter. Perhaps my favorite part. This week's was “Why was the man standing on one leg while waiting at the ATM? He was checking his balance.”

VCM: Do you have a favorite moment, interview, or story from your podcast?

Simon: Really, you're going to ask me to play favorites? It's hard to choose a favorite, but episode 266 with Walter Willett, Ph.D. in Boston, was certainly very memorable. Dr. Willett is the most cited nutrition scientist in the world. He rarely does interviews, so I enjoyed that opportunity to get to know him and hear his perspective on things. It was also very funny when I asked Dr. Joel Fuhrman if he soaks his nuts, to which he replied, I just use soap and water.
